LA Auto Show: 2017 Fiat 124 Spider

Posted by

The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider debuted today in LA, and it will almost certainly be a delight to US buyers who have missed sports cars from Fiat.

What Is It?

The Fiat 124 Spider is based on underpinnings from the Mazda MX-5 Miata, which is about as terrific a donor car as you’re going to get. It shares no body panels with the Miata; instead, its curvy sheetmetal recalls the long-running, Pininfarina-styled 124 Spider that ended sales in the US in the early 1980s.

In addition to unique styling, Fiat inserted one of its own engines under the hood.

What Fiat Is Saying:

Olivier François, Head of FIAT Brand, FCA – Global:

“There’s no better way to celebrate 50 years of the Fiat 124 Spider than to bring back this iconic roadster, pairing its Italian styling of the past with all of the modern performance and technology of today.”

What’s New In The 2017 124 Spider:

  • Miata platform with revised styling and engine availability
  • Power comes from Fiat’s 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, with more power (160 hp) and torque (184 lb.-ft.) than the Miata’s
  • Transmissions are the Miata’s six-speed manual or automatic
  • Two trim levels: base Classica and luxo Lusso
  • The first 124 cars produced will be a special “Prima Edizione Lusso”, with a badge indicating its production number and a color scheme of blue exterior/saddle interior that references a common color scheme of the original 124 Spider

When Does It Go On Sale?

Look for the 124 Spider to hit dealer in summer 2016.
