2016 New York Auto Show: 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF

Posted by

Mazda’s MX-5 convertible gets a smart new retractable top for 2017.

What is it?

In its last generation, Mazda’s beloved MX-5 had the PRHT, which stood for Power Retractable Hard Top. Now comes the MX-5 RF, which stands for Retractable Fastback.

The RF’s lines join a traditional targa sensibility with the Miata’s Kodo design language, and the results are striking.

The RF is what it says; the rear structure lifts up, and down goes the roof, in two parts. Resulting trunk room is about the same as the convertible’s.

The tunneled rear window can be lowered to provide breeze-through airflow.

It opens up the MX-5 while providing the reassurance of rear pillars.

It’s a look that particularly suits the MX-5’s proportions. Note that this is not a Miata, it’s an MX-5 RF.

The Machine Grey finish of the intro car is a new premium color; Mazda says it highlights the MX-5’s design language.

Really nice curves on the rear section.

What Mazda says:

Masashi Nakayama, Mazda MX-5 Chief Designer:

“To convey the fun and charm of the MX-5 experience to a larger, more diverse range of people rather than just sports car fans, I felt the MX-5 RF must embody natural beauty and not attempt to attract attention by merely being different.

It would be impossible to achieve a combination of this new form of driving pleasure and beautiful fastback styling if I applied conventional thinking. ”

What’s new:

  • Retractable hardtop roof
  • New Machine Grey premium paint

When does it go on sale?

Mazda will begin taking orders later this year.
