New York Auto Show 2016: 2016 Porsche 911 R

Posted by

Porsche used its time at the New York International Auto Show to give the pure 2016 Porsche 911 R its North American Debut.

What Is It?

The 2016 Porsche 911 R is the most unfiltered 911 experience a Porsche driver can expect. Limited to 991 units for 2016, the 911 R more notable for what it doesn’t have than what it does: no wing, no turbochargers, no automatic transmission, no rear seats, no air conditioning, no radio. (You can option the last two, but why bother?)

It’s the minimalist’s approach to performance driving, focusing solely on what engineers can extract out of a flat six-cylinder engine. The 911 R’s 4.0-liter engine churns up an even 500hp, and 338-lb.ft. of torque at 6,250 RPM and runs you to 60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds, at a top speed of 200 MPH.

The engine comes straight out of the 911 GT3 RS, but it’s in a car that weighs 110 pounds less thanks to lightweight materials everywhere it’s reasonable to use them. The front fenders are carbon fiber. The roof is titanium. Sound insulation, you ask? Why don’t you just toddle on over to Cadillac. They might have something more your speed.

The flat six bolts to a six-speed manual gearbox exclusively. Want one of those incredible PDK transmissions? Buy another model.

You’re not out there completely by yourself. A custom-calibrated Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system helps you stay out of the kitty litter, and the 911 R is smart enough to rev-match, making you sound like you can heel-and-toe like Mark Donohue, even if you drive more like Phil Donahue.

There are a few optional nods to practicality: You can order a free radio. You can order a free air conditioner. You can even order a front-axle lift to increase the ground clearance of the front axle by approximately 1.2 inches from the comfort of the driver’s seat, so you can clear the speed bumps at you’re daughter’s elementary school.

Are there faster Porsches? Yes. But there are few that put the driver in charge as much as this one does.

What Is Porsche Saying?

“The new 2016 Porsche 911 R follows the tradition set by the first road-homologated race car bearing the name in 1967. Produced as part of a limited production series, the original 911 R (R for Racing) was entered in rallies, in the Targa Florio and in world record runs. Like its legendary predecessor, the new 911 R features a systematic lightweight construction, a high level of performance and an unfiltered driving experience,” reads the Porsche press release announcing the 911 R’s availability.
