Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupé (C 217) 2014The latest in a long line of dream cars created by Mercedes-Benz and AMG, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is scheduled to debut at the New York International Auto Show, opening on April 18 and continuing through April 27, 2014 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City, New York, USA. The car presents breathtaking performance and irresistible style loaded with the latest in technological advancements, innovative safety devices, and cutting edge passenger comfort features.

BMW Fr 31Classic Mercedes-Benz styling meets new and exciting lines to form an aesthetic effect that embodies elegance. A three dimensional AMG “twin-blade” radiator grille in silver shadow (a matte silver finish) seems to dominate the front of this automotive masterpiece, shouting performance with distinctive AMG bagging between the lamellas. Adding clarification that this is a high-performance creation from Affalterbach is the A-wing located just below the grille. It is painted in body-color, adorned with the trademark “A” and spans the entire width of the front apron. Large outer air intakes scoop up ambient air and deliver it to various engine induction and cooling systems. Finally, on bottom the front splitter is finished in silver shadow and serves to both optimize air flow for engine cooling and reduce front axle lift; creating a more aerodynamic balance. Providing separation between the A-wing and the splitter, high-gloss black grilles exude V8 BITURBOquality while enhancing the appearance of a lowered center of gravity. Side sill panel inserts in silver shadow, with “V8 BITURBO” badging, carry the windswept appearance away from the front end and over the specially designed AMG wheels causing the coupe to exude energy even when sitting still. In the rear the silver shadow lower trim and gloss-black diffuser provides a contrast that closely resembles the front A-wing. The chrome tipped dual-exhaust tailpipes with sport flaps protrude menacingly from the diffuser insert and vertical air outlets in the rear apron take the place of a rear spoiler lip, further enhancing aerodynamic efficiency. The “S63 AMG” logo (in contemporary new text) is just below the LED taillights.

MB BrakesBenefiting from the AMG Lightweight Performance Strategy, the 2015 S63 AMG 4MATIC is 140-pounds lighter than its predecessor, even though it has a higher output rating and more standard equipment. The entire outer skin and the front end of the car are constructed from lightweight aircraft grade aluminum, a lightweight lithium-ion battery is standard equipment, as are a weight-optimized AMG high-performance composite braking system and optional AMG forged alloy wheels. The lower overall vehicle weight combined with greater engine performance creates a higher power-to-weight-ratio resulting in mind-numbing acceleration, increased top-speed, and improved fuel efficiency.

MB IntThe wrap-around design of the dash and door panels of the S63 AMG complimented with luxurious materials and exquisite workmanship create an atmosphere of supreme luxury. Fine power adjustable, heated/ventilated Napa leather AMG sport seats, adorned with engraved AMG badging, provide sturdy yet extremely comfortable support. Analog instrumentation, in a high-resolution TFT color AMG embossed instrument cluster, includes a 200 mph speedometer and distinctive tachometer with the “V8 BITURBO” insignia. A leather-wrapped three-spoke sport steering wheel, complete with aluminum paddle shifters, ensures total vehicle control and the space-aged LCD touchscreen monitor make radio, climate control, telephone, and navigation functions much easier that on previous models.

MB SideStandard equipment on the S63 AMG is a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. This is a first for the model in the U.S. market. The rear biased AMG performance 4MATIC system sends 67-percent of the power to the rear wheels and 33-percent to the front wheels, providing AMG signature driving dynamics and boosting acceleration from a standing stop. The all-wheel drivetrain also improves handling on wet and slippery surfaces in winter driving conditions when fitted with optional winter tires.

MB EngIn typical AMG tradition, a massively adequate twin-turbocharged V8 engine delivers 577-hp and 664 lb.-ft. of torque. Like all of the engines produced in the Affalterbach, Germany AMG facility, the “one man one engine” philosophy is implemented in the new S63 AMG. Highly skilled and experienced engine assembly technicians work under the strictest of manufacturing standards to produce engines that adhere to the closest tolerances in the automotive industry. Upon completion a specially designed AMG engine plate, bearing the technician’s signature, is affixed to the engine. Despite the enhanced engine performance (and a 0 to 60 mph time of just 3.9-seconds) the S63 AMG is expected to be more fuel efficient than its predecessors.

MB RearEfficiency aside, the performance aspects of the S63 are a major selling point. Nevertheless, the throaty rumble of free flowing high-performance exhaust is obviously not for everyone. This is evident by the presence of specially designed exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. The flaps are opened during performance driving conditions and closed when less conspicuous exhaust noise is desired.

MB Rr 3An AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed sport transmission fits perfectly with the twin-turbocharged V8. Three distinctively different driving modes are available: Controlled efficiency, Sport, and Manual. Top speed for the S63 AMG is electronically controlled at 186 mph.
