New York Auto Show 2016: 2017 BMW Alpina B7 xDrive

Posted by

The 2017 BMW Alpina B7 xDrive makes its North American debut at the 2016 New York International Auto Show.

It pairs with the all-new 2017 M760i xDrive in BMW’s lineup.

What Is It?

The 2017 BMW Alpina B7 xDrive extends Alpina’s reputation in building some of the most powerful BMWs ever produced.

The Alpina brand is world-renowned for its BMW tuning prowess, since 1965 after Burkard Bovensiepen commandeered a shed in the Alpina typewriter factory to build carburetors and cylinder heads for BMWs.

By 1970, Alpina-prepared BMWs won the European Touring Car Championship, the German Hillclimb Championship, and the 24 Hour race at Spa.

The BMW 750i xDrive is already a potent car at 450hp, but Alpina massaged it to deliver 600hp and 590-lb.ft. of torque, all of which the ZF 8HP90 eight-speed transmission was built to handle.

When the car debuted in Munich, BMW cited a zero to 60 time of just 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of 193 mpg.

That kind of supercar performance comes thanks to a revised air intake system, intercooler and turbocharger configuration, along with a higher-performance cooling system than the merely pedestrian 750i.

Like the 750i, the twin-scroll, twin-turbochargers are crammed into the V of the V-8 engine, and they feature larger inlets and outlets for optimal use of exhaust gases, even at lower speeds.

At just 2,000 RPM, the engine delivers 494-lb.ft. of torque on the way to its maximum 590-lb.ft.

The 2017 BMW Alpina B7 xDrive features an adpative air suspension, Dynamic Damper Control and Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview, and steering at all four corners.

At speeds over 140mph, the Alpina B7 xDrive squats 0.8 inches to offer better stability. The 20-inch wheels are Alpina-specific (and similar to the turbine-style wheels equipped on all Alpina-tuned BMWs for years), and shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

Massive 15.5-inch brake rotors with fixed, four-piston calipers manage the braking up front, with 14.5-inch rotors and floating calipers at the rear.

What BMW Says

“The all-new BMW Alpina B7 xDrive stands for luxury paired with precision dynamics, effortless performance and comfort at the highest level,” says a release from BMW.
