North American International Auto Show 2016: 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Minivan

Posted by
For 30 years, Chrysler used the Town & Country badge for its brand of front-drive minivans, but at the Detroit Auto Show, the van resurrects the Pacifica nameplate. Along with the traditional gas engine, there’s a hybrid version, too.

What Is It?

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is a minivan from the people who brought you the Town and Country minivan for the last three decades. It’s riding on an all-new platform that has its roots in the Chrysler 200 sedan. It’s a bit longer than the current Chrysler people-hauler, but the rest of its dimensions are pretty close to what’s available now.

The familiar Chrysler Pentastar V-6 is the primary engine, putting out 287hp in this edition. The big news is the hybrid powertrain, with a 248hp Atkinson cycle 3.6-liter V-6 and an 16kWh lithium ion battery hooked to an electrically variable transmission with dual-motor EV drive capability, a technology that FCA has patented. Chrysler’s claim is up to an 80mpg equivalent with the new drive system.

The Pacifica can be ordered to fit seven or eight passengers, and with all the seats folded into the floor, you can haul a 4×8 sheet of plywood inside with the tailgate lowered. If you do go the hybrid route, you lose the Stow ‘n’ Go seating in the second row.

What Is Chrysler Saying?

“The all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is truly a no-compromises minivan, giving customers everything they need or want,” said Timothy Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands, FCA – North America.

“We started from the ground up to design the most technologically advanced minivan, which offers bold styling, class-leading ride and handling, and unmatched fuel economy, with the Pacifica Hybrid delivering up to 80 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) in city driving. The all-new Chrysler Pacifica was thoughtfully designed and engineered to provide unsurpassed levels of comfort, convenience, technology and functionality, making it the perfect combination for modern families.”

When Does It Go On Sale?
The Chrysler Pacifica arrives in showrooms in the spring of 2016, and the hybrid version arrives in the second half of 2016.
