North American International Auto Show 2016: 2017 Lincoln Continental

Posted by

The Lincoln Continental was the car to see at last year’s North American International Auto Show, and this year brings the “quiet luxury” of the production version.

What Is It?

It has been a long time since Lincoln has really had a flagship that competes with the big cars from Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW. The new Continental is the car that Lincoln hopes can do that again, especially after Cadillac showed off its CT6 at the New York Auto Show last year.

Look for a 3.0-liter V6 engine with twin turbochargers to produce a projected 400 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque. The Continental has an available all-wheel-drive system paired with Dynamic Torque Vectoring that transfers torque on demand to the appropriate rear wheel when driving through corners.

Lincoln Drive Control has three settings – comfort, normal and sport – that each adapt steering and suspension settings to tailor ride and handling. A new adaptive steering system is optional, and helps to provide crisp steering response.

Continental features Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection that not only enhances occupant safety, but the safety of those walking around the car.

The production version seats five, signalling that the rear seat passengers aren’t going to be as coddled as the concept car suggested. The seats in back are heated and cooled, but don’t recline and don’t have separate desks and loafers the way the concept car did.

What is Lincoln Saying?

“The Continental name has long been associated with the ultimate in Lincoln beauty and luxury,” said Kumar Galhotra, president of Lincoln. “With the all-new model, we are focusing on creating more human, personally tailored experiences for our clients – providing what we call quiet luxury.”

When Does It Go On Sale?

The 2017 Lincoln Continental goes on sale in the fall of 2016.
