2014 Beijing Auto Show: Koenigsegg Agera 1

Agera 1 fr 3Koenigsegg is one of those exotic automaker names that you wish you had heard of sooner, so that you could have started practicing to say it correctly. Well, I wonder how you say Koenigsegg in Chinese? This Swedish car company was formed by a young man named Christian von Koenigsegg, who possessed extraordinary vision and intelligence where it pertained to all things mechanical (especially cars). Christian was so talented and determined in fact, that by the age of 22, after dreaming of having a sports car unlike anything on this planet, actually built one and then built a business from it. The supreme manifestation of young Christian’s dream is culminated in the 2015 Koenigsegg Agera 1, unveiled earlier this year in Geneva and currently on display at the Beijing International Auto Show in (yep, you guessed it) Beijing, China.

Agera 1 All openThe Agera 1 is very similar to the Agera R, but with a few intense differences. The name — “Agera 1” represents the power-to-weight ratio of this car — it is approximately one. One horsepower per kilometer of gross vehicle weight will typically get you to your destination in one quick hurry and the Agera 1 can certainly accomplish that; and for only about $200k. Before you contact your local Koenigsegg dealer, this particular car is only available for sale in China and only six will be made.

Agera 1 frThe Agera 1 is poised to take on the likes of the Bugatti Veyron and the Hennessey Venom GT for the crown of “The World’s Fastest Production Car.” It is composed of a lightweight carbon-fiber and Kevlar body with a gross vehicle weight of only 2,998-pounds. Carbon-fiber and Kevlar are used extensively in manufacturing this car, and not just in the body panels and monocoque “frame”, from the ergonomic racing seats to the specially designed racing wheels “lighter is faster” is the battle cry.

Agera 1 interiorThe mid-engine is a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V8 that delivers 1,341-horsepower and 1,011 lb.-ft. of torque (yes, it is correct — I checked it twice). That is more than a full megawatt of power, generated from a street car. It is equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission, with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, and an electronic rear differential. Theoretically, the car can dash from 0 to 248 mph in only 20-seconds and has a top-speed of 273-mph but actual testing is yet to be done.

Agera 1 closedIf the Agera 1 is capable of such acceleration and top speeds, the ultra-lightweight design would demand that precautions were taken to avoid the car being swept away. The Swedish designers have left no stone unturned. A complex system of automated vents funnel air through the body, providing downforce and stability and a fully adaptive aerodynamic system allows the air to rush across the exterior virtually unfettered. At high speeds a free-floating dynamic venture flap flexes beneath the nose of the vehicle, practically “sucking” the vehicle to the pavement. An electronically controlled and hydraulically actuated Le Mans style top-mounted spoiler provides added downforce according to driving conditions with three distinctive settings; low drag, braking, and high downforce.
