The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro also offers a broader powertrain range featuring a turbocharged four-cylinder engine as standard equipment, for the first time ever. “Redesigning the Camaro is thrilling and challenging all at once, but the secret is to offer something more,” said Mark Reuss, General Motors executive vice president of Product Development. “For Camaro enthusiasts, it retains iconic design cues and offers even more performance. For a new generation of buyers, the 2016 Camaro incorporates our most innovative engineering ideas with finely honed performance and leading design.”

cq5dam.web.1280.1280 (1)From the new interpretation of the Camaro’s legendary red, white, and blue “banner” insignia to the more pronounced and sculpted lines and lower roof panels, this sixth generation offering presents a more athletic looking exterior aesthetic. Tighter, leaner construction contributes significantly to the car’s aerodynamic properties. The new Camaro is meticulously tuned (350-hours) in the wind tunnel to reduce aerodynamic lift for improved handling and better fuel efficiency. In an effort to optimize customer customization possibilities, Chevrolet offers 10 exterior color combinations, 5 interior combinations, and a full complement of lighting and accessory options; including (but not limited to) wheel packages and stripe packages. The more muscular and sculpted exterior yields a wider and lower appearance, even though the sixth generation Camaro is virtually the same size as the fifth generation car. New for 2016 is more modern lighting with LED technology. “From every angle, you’ll never mistake this for anything but a Camaro,” said Tom Peters, design director. “We’ve taken that iconic design and amplified its proportions to reflect a more dynamic driving experience – like the T-shirt on a muscular physique.”cq5dam.web.1280.1280 (5)Much like the exterior, the interior has been redesigned with the latest technology in a package that is instantly recognizable. For instance, the dual-binnacle style instrument cluster hood has been retained but with redesigned gauges. The cluster features analog instrumentation, providing the driver with essential information, as well as an optional eight-inch high-definition display screen for navigation, performance, and infotainment functions. A second eight-inch screen is integrated into the center stack which is designed with driver comfort and convenience in mind. Climate controls are neatly wrapped around the center vents, eliminating some of the clutter caused by multiple buttons, and helping to make adjusting climate control function and temperature easier while maintaining eye contact with the road. “Given the level of technology and performance, the interior had to be modern and driver focused.” said Ryan Vaughan, interior design manager. “But although the interior is an all new design, it is still instinctively recognizable as a Camaro.”

cq5dam.web.1280.1280 (2)Standard equipment for the 2016 Camaro includes a 275-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 6-seconds and has a fuel efficiency rating of 30 mpg (highway), making it the most fuel efficient Camaro ever produced. A 335-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine is the second available option. The V6 variant offers direct fuel injection, variable valve timing, and (for the first time) cylinder deactivation technology. Both the 2.0-liter and 3.6-liter engines are available with either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed Hydra-Matic 8L45 automatic transmission. Finally, a 455-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine is offered for the Camaro SS and LT1. Shifting duties are handles with either a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed Hydra-Matic 8L90 automatic transmission (with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, of course).

cq5dam.web.1280.1280 (3)“We have had the incredible opportunity to meet literally thousands of Gen 5 Camaro owners who provided direct feedback on what they loved about their car and what they wanted for the next-gen Camaro,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “As a result, the 2016 Camaro builds on what made the current Camaro such a success with more power, more agile handling and more technology. We expect it will set the new benchmark in the segment – and give a new generation of enthusiasts a reason to fall in love with Camaro.”
