Gabby Giffords Rode a Lambretta Scooter

As if we weren’t impressed with Gabby Giffords heroic recovery enough, now we learn that when she was in college, she rode an Italian Lambretta scooter, and she used bolt cutters to get it back from somebody who stole it from her.

As you almost certainly remember, Gabby Giffords represented Arizona’s 8th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 3, 2007 to January 25, 2012.

Yesterday, Giffords posted a “Throwback Thursday” photo on her Facebook page.

“#‎TBT to my college days, when I zipped around Scripps College on my Vespa,” she wrote. The scooter is actually a Lambretta, but “Vespa” ends up being the catchall term for any Italian scooter, like “Xerox” is for copy machines.

“I’ll never forget the day somebody stole it and then had the audacity to advertise it for sale,” she said. “It wasn’t long before I found out where the bike was being stored and I used a chain cutter to set it free.”

On January 8, 2011, just days into her third term, a gunman attempted to assassinate Giffords at a supermarket where she was holding a public meeting with her constituents.

Giffords suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Thirteen people were injured an six people died, including federal judge John Roll.

In the years since, Giffords has recovered her ability to walk, speak, read and write. She retired from the House to recover from her injuries, but promised to continue her role as a public servant.
