The Most Ticketed Car Will Surprise You

This may be a surprise to many that assume the most ticketed car is a CorvetteCamaro, or Mustang GT.  Something powerful and built for speed.  Those types of cars are on the list, but they all trail the Lexus ES 300, a V6 sedan made from 1992 through 2002.

This is the most popular model Lexus vehicle, and it was made in very large numbers for a luxury sedan, but it’s a small amount compared to similar mainstream cars like the Camry V6, which does not make the top ten.

If we had to guess how the ES 300 made it to the top, we could image that this very popular sedan among the affluent and near-affluent may now be in the hands of its second or third owner.  Perhaps a large number of these cars were given to sons and daughters by parents who used them for five to ten years and then kept them in the family.  The ES 300 is as reliable as the sunrise, so why sell it on?

They were also relatively quick cars, though their horsepower range from 190 to about 220 wouldn’t seem impressive in a premium sedan today.  Perhaps it is the hot-shoe youngsters racking up all those tickets?

IS 350 front

The really interesting part of so many ES 300 drivers reporting having been ticketed is that the much more sporty, and much faster, Lexus IS 350 has so dramatically fewer tickets by percent.  Just 3% report getting a ticket in that car (and this author is one of those).

We would toss this list out for being ridiculous except that last year’s top car, the Subaru WRX, and this years number two and three most ticketed cars, the Nissan 350Z and the Dodge Charger, are all straight up ticket magnets.

Penny Gusner, consumer analyst for, makes the point that, “It’s the driver that gets tickets, not the car.  But it is interesting to see what vehicle makes and models attract drivers who are prone to traffic violations.”
