One extra you should skip is rustproofing. New cars no longer need it and if your car is undercoated by a third party, some automakers will void the warranty, said Mike Quincy, auto content specialist at the Consumer Reports Auto Test Center.

There’s a fair amount of markup, the option can cost $200 to $1,200 depending on type of car, but cars leaving the factory today have excellent rustproofing.
