Latest Safety Recalls: Exotic Cars

NHTSALo and behold, ultra expensive exotic cars have recalls, too? I never would have realized that a fine British automobile that could cost upwards of 100,000-pound could be saddled with something as pesky as a safety recall. Seriously though, cars are pretty much cars and it doesn.t matter how much they cost or where they are manufactured (although the Brits could learn a few things about wiring, etc.). They all have flaws and all vehicles sold in the U.S. are at the mercy of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Therefore, all will be recalled and subjected to the federal judicial process if the proper steps are not taken to correct the conditions of the recall.


Here is a short list of the latest safety recalls for exotic cars and a couple of Japanese imports, per the NHTSA. Remember to check inside the driver door jamb to find the date of manufacture (month/year), on most cars.


NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V280000

exigeLotus Cars USA Recall Campaign Number: 201401R (Elise/Exige), and 2014/02R (Evora)

Vehicles Affected: Certain 2008 through 2011 Lotus Elise and Lotus Exige vehicles manufactured from November 2007 through July 2011 and 2011 Lotus Evora vehicles manufactured from September 2010 through September 2011.Approximately 860 vehicles are expected for inclusion under this recall campaign.


Cause: Oil cooler hose/s may detach from their respective fittings, inadvertently.


EliseConcern: If the pressurized oil cooler line becomes disconnected from the fitting, engine oil could be sprayed onto a tire and increase the risk of a crash at high speeds. Additionally, engine oil sprayed on hot engine components could cause a fire in the engine area. A low engine oil condition could also cause severs engine damage.


EvoraCorrection: Lotus will notify vehicle owners with a schedule for vehicle inspection and repair, as needed and free of charge. The manufacturer has not provided a notification schedule for repairs. Owners may contact Lotus customer service at 1-800-245-6887.


NOTE: If you feel that you own a vehicle that is affected by this condition, immediate repair (before operating the vehicle) is recommended. This recall campaign is an expansion recall of numbers 11V-510 and 13v-041.


NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V291000

Jaguar Land Rover of North America Recall Campaign Number: JO36

2013 XFVehicles Affected: Certain 2013 & 2014 Jaguar XF vehicles manufactured from October 18, 2012 through February 25, 2014. Approximately 68 vehicles are expected for inclusion in this recall campaign.


Cause: The right rear brake pipe could rub against a bracket located on the rear sub-frame until a hole is present.


Concern: The hole will leak high-pressure brake fluid. A low brake fluid level can result in decreased braking efficiency and may even lead to brake failure, if it becomes severe enough. Of course either of these conditions dramatically increases the risk of a motor vehicle accident.


2013 XF sideCorrection: Jaguar will notify the owners of affected vehicles with specific instructions regarding vehicle inspection and repair, if necessary. All repairs associated with this recall condition will be performed at your local Jaguar dealership, free of charge. This recall is scheduled to begin July 29, 2014.


NOTE: This is one of those recalls that might be better off handled at your next service, whether or not you receive a letter of notification. Just have your friendly mechanic check your rear brake lines to make certain that they are routed properly and no wear is taking place. If you already have a brake fluid leak, then you may want to contact Jaguar customer service at 1-855-524-8278.


NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V292000 

Jaguar Land rover North America Recall Campaign Number: J040

XJVehicles Affected: Certain 2013 Jaguar XJ vehicles manufactured from May 21, 2012 through July 10, 2012. Approximately 70 vehicles are expected for inclusion in this recall campaign.

Cause: The generic software calibration that is installed in the Restraints Control Module (RCM) may not meet the necessary specifications for proper operation of the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint System (SRS). As such, these vehicles may not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208 entitled “Occupant Crash Protection.”

Concern: In the event of a motor vehicle crash, the SRS could fail to operate properly increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.

Correction: Jaguar will notify vehicle owners by mail with specific instructions for having new RCM software uploaded into the vehicles in question, free of charge. This recall campaign in scheduled to begin July 29, 2014.

NOTE: Again, improper airbag operation is some pretty serious stuff. Use extreme caution when driving if you feel that you own or regularly operate a vehicle affected by this condition. Always wear your safety belt and have the condition repaired as soon as possible. You can contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-524-8278.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V310000

Hyundai motor Company Recall Campaign Number: 117

ElantraVehicles Affected: Certain 2010 through 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring vehicles manufactured from December 15, 2009 and May 7, 2012. Approximately 35,000 vehicles are expected for inclusion in this campaign.


Cause: A metal support bracket attached to the headliner may become dislodged during a side curtain airbag deployment.


Concern: Hyundai is concerned that the bracket, which has relatively sharp edges, could make contact with a vehicle occupant during side curtain airbag deployment and cause a laceration or other injury.


Correction: Hyundai will notify owners of affected vehicles with instructions for repairing the condition, free of charge. The recall si expected to begin in mid-August 2014.


NOTE: As reported by last week, no injuries have been suffered as a result of this condition. Officials at Hyundai saw a part with similarities to a previously recalled part (from 2011 Elantra sedans) and got out in front of any problems with this recall campaign. Good job, Hyundai. NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V281000

Mitsubishi Motors North America Recall Campaign Number: SR-14-004

LancerVehicles Affected: Certain 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution vehicles manufactured from January 31, 2014 through February 21, 2014 and 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart vehicles manufactured from February 3, 2014 through February 14, 2014. Approximately 146 vehicles are expected for inclusion in this campaign.


Cause: The power steering high-pressure hose could be too close to the cross-member brace on some vehicles, resulting in improper contact between the hose and the sharp edges of the metal brace.


EvolutionConcern: If the power steering high-pressure hose becomes ruptured, it could spray hydraulic fluid a substantial distance. The hydraulic fluid is flammable if sprayed directly onto an ignition source or high-temperature engine component (such as an exhaust manifold) and could cause a fire. Additionally, a loss of power steering fluid can result in increased steering effort, increasing the risk of a motor vehicle crash.


Correction: Mitsubishi will notify vehicle owners with instructions for having affected vehicles inspected and repaired as necessary, free of charge. Vehicle owners should begin being notified in July, 2014.
