Safety Recall Update – August 10, 2015

Posted by

After last week’s avalanche of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recalls for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), this week’s meager offering may seem miniscule. Nevertheless, there are two entries that meet my criteria of over 100,000-units. Surprisingly, one is a hybrid powered vehicle. This may be the first hybrid sedan that I have written about in this venue. Of course, you can to the NHTSA website and enter your vehicle identification number (located on the dash, near the lower corner of the windshield on the driver side) to get the latest information on your vehicle.

Log onto for all the biggest NHTSA safety recalls, automotive news and views, and millions of listings for new and used vehicles of every shape, size, and color. You can even download an app to follow your favorite vehicle with your phone.

Remember to look inside of the driver door jamb (most vehicles) to find the production date of your vehicle (Month/Year). This information may help  you to determine whether your ride is currently under a NHTSA safety recall campaign.

2014 Dodge ChargerNHTSA Campaign Number: 15V467000
FCA Recall Campaign Number: R35

Vehicles Affected: Certain 2011-2014 Dodge Charger vehicles manufactured from May 6, 2010 through June 5, 2014. Approximately 284,153 vehicles are expected for inclusion in this recall campaign.

Cause: In the affected vehicles, the side impact sensor calibrations may be overly sensitive, and as a result, the side air bag inflatable curtains and seat air bags may unexpectedly deploy and the seat belt pre-tensioners may activate.

Concern: Air bags that unexpectedly deploy may increase the risk of a motor vehicle crash and subsequent injury.

Correction: Chrysler will notify owners with detailed instructions regarding making contact with a qualified dealer that will update the Occupant Restraint Control module calibration, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

2014 Toyota Prius VNHTSA Campaign Number: 15V449000
Toyota Recall Campaign Number:

Vehicles Affected: Certain 2012-2014 Toyota Prius V vehicles manufactured from August 22, 2011 through June 30, 2014. Approximately 108,624 vehicles are expected for inclusion in this recall campaign.

Cause: A component within the hybrid inverter assembly may overheat, causing the hybrid system to reduce output power allowing the vehicle to only drive a short distance. In some circumstances, the hybrid system may shut down causing the vehicle to stop while being driven.

Concern: The vehicle may enter a fail-safe/limp-home mode that limits the drivability of the vehicle. The hybrid system could also shut down completely resulting in a vehicle stall, increasing the risk of a motor vehicle crash.

Correction: Toyota will notify owners with specific instructions for contacting qualified dealers who will update the software for the motor/generator control electronic control unit (ECU) and the hybrid control ECU, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in late July 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.
