Kia and Amazon Partner to Make Charging Your Electric Car Easier

The growing numbers of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles are great for reducing your need to stop by the local gas station. You can charge-up while you’re out, but you’ll need an at-home charger, too. Kia is making it easier to go electric through a partnership with Amazon.

This new program is designed to make the process of shopping for an at-home charging solution quicker. Amazon has always been focused on making life less stressful by eliminating the need to go to a store. This saves time and reduces the hassle of having to go to run out for last minute items.

Now, Amazon is applying its skills to at-home chargers with a little help from Kia. It’ll be a one-stop shopping experience where a customer can order the charger and schedule installation services all through Amazon.

There are a variety of charges from which to select starting with the base Level 1 charger provided by Kia. You can pay extra to upgrade to a Level 2 charger and reduce the time needed to get to a full charge.

To help make the decision about whether or not to upgrade, the charging times with both chargers are listed for the 2019 Kia Soul EV, 2019 Kia Niro PHEV, and 2019 Kia Optima PHEV. Charging goes from under 9 hours to under 3 hours with the Niro and Optima. That’s a big difference, but maybe not enough to warrant the extra expense.

If you’re looking at the Soul, it takes 33 hours for a full charge so overnight won’t do the trick. Upgrade to Level 2 and the time drops to 5.1 to 6 hours, which is likely enough of a difference to convince buyers the upgrade is worth the price.

Once you pick your charger, then you can schedule an appointment for an electrician to come out and get the charger installed before your new Kia is even delivered.

“Home-charging can’t get any easier than this,” says Orth Hedrick, executive director of Car Planning and Telematics, Kia Motors America. “Being able to order a Level 2 charger and installation through Amazon further demystifies and simplifies the experience for new Kia EV and PHEV owners. It’s just another example of how we’re constantly striving to provide the very best vehicles and customer experience.”

While the public is increasingly willing to accept electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, it’s still far from mainstream. Every step automakers take toward making the process easier increases the chances consumers will opt-in. Convenient home chargers installed by Amazon is one way to make the process easier.
