VIDEO: Police Officer Resigns After Wrong Way Drive

Street racing is illegal for a reason. Public roads are not the place to test out the awesome power of your sweet new ride. Find a track if you want to do that so the rest of us can continue on with our lives. A bunch of street racers in North Carolina were recently nabbed for their misbehavior and a North Carolina State Trooper was sucked into the mess when he decided to chase them by going the wrong way on the highway.

It all started when a group of people decided that U.S. 321 in Newton, North Carolina was a good place to have some illegal and dangerous fun. The group of cars worked together to slow down and block highway traffic so others in their group could have a street race.

The police showed up and impounded five BMWs while the two people who were racing managed to get away. The drivers all insist that they were absolutely not racing, although witnesses reported the group was weaving in and out of traffic at speeds of over 100 mph.

That’s a ridiculously dangerous situation and one that needed to be stopped before the alleged racers caused an accident. The second part of the story involves one of the responding North Carolina Highway Patrol officers. He made his way to the scene by driving the wrong way down the highway. Video of the trooper’s wrong-way driver surfaced and it is frightening to watch. It’s hard to imagine what it would be like if you were one of the civilians traveling in the correct direction as the trooper sped the wrong way.

Trooper T.J. Williamson resigned effective immediately after the video surfaced. The Highway Patrol is investigating the video.

It’s a scary situation all around. That big metal box you’re driving isn’t a toy. Used the wrong way you can kill someone no matter how skilled you think you are behind the wheel. Anyone who thinks street racing is a good idea clearly has some issues with making good judgements. It’s not worth endangering yourself and others just to prove that you know how to push that pedal on the right all the way down to the floor.

As for the police officer, that’s a bit more complicated. Police officers often do things that we can’t or shouldn’t because we’re not the ones charged with keeping the public safe. It looks like the guy made a bad call, but while they’re investigating the situation we’ll withhold judgement.
