When you are out looking for a new vehicle, you are probably being given all kinds of technical details about horsepower and torque. But what does it all mean? And which is more important? Let us clear up any confusion for anyone who’s not sure what all of that means.

What is Horsepower?

What is the first thing you hear when it comes to sports cars? More often than not, it’s horsepower. So, what is it? Horsepower is the way to measure the power of an engine on any given vehicle. The larger this number, the stronger the engine, and the stronger the engine, the faster your ride can go. Take for example the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+. The Chiron Super Sport 300+ has an engine that’s rated for 1,577 horsepower and earned Bugatti the impressive achievement of being the first-ever manufacturer to surpass 300 mph. Talk about fast!

What is Torque?

Torque is the measure of twisting force that is applied to a car’s wheels. It can be viewed as how “strong” a vehicle is. Torque is the force that gives a sports car the ability to go from 0-60 in an impressive fashion.  Ever been pushed back in your seat after stepping on the gas? That’s also torque in action. A perfect example of this is the Koenigsegg Gemera, considered the world’s quickest production car. Capable of generating 2,581 lb.-ft of torque, this sports car hits the 0-60 mark in 1.9 seconds. Do you prioritize hauling heavy loads over what your 0-60 time will be? Torque is what will guarantee that you’ll be able to move your precious cargo as you like.

Now that we’ve gone over what horsepower and torque actually mean, which one should you prioritize when it comes to choosing your next vehicle? It all depends on your wants and needs. Your intention with your next vehicle is one of the biggest factors to consider. If you’re looking for a sports car that is able to get to high speeds and maintain those speeds, focus on horsepower. Looking to do some hauling or sling some mud while off-roading? Torque will be more important to you because of how these activities focus on acceleration and providing power to your vehicle’s wheels.

Now that you know a bit more about horsepower and torque, you can start to think about which one is most important to you when choosing your next vehicle. Remember, horsepower equates to faster speeds like the Bugatti where torque is the force that propels a vehicle forward as seen in the Gemera. There are a number of other factors that you’ll want to think about, so we encourage you to do more research when considering a new vehicle purchase and starting your search. If it’s been a while since your last buying experience or this is your first time on this journey, here are 5 tips to buying a vehicle today!
