2019 Ford F-250 Super Duty – Heavy Duty Capability with an Upscale Interior

Posted by

The Ford F-250 Super Duty is made to do work. Sure, that’s true of most trucks, including its smaller sibling, the F-150, but the capability of a heavy duty truck puts it in another class. You see one of these on the road and chances are good it belongs to someone who uses it to haul a trailer or carry a large payload. This is a serious truck.

The F-250 is also a big truck, so don’t plan on parking it anyplace where there isn’t plenty of room. Wide open spaces are its friend and city streets, well, not so much. Our F-250 Lariat included side steps, and even with those it was a heck of a step to get into this thing becuase it’s so tall. Enter parking garages with a careful eye to that low ceiling.

But, for the most part, that’s not what you’re doing with an F-250. Instead you’re using it for its capability and on that score it’s a winner. It can tow up to 35,000 pounds with features to make hauling that heavy load easier. There’s a reverse guidance system that uses cameras in the side mirrors and guidelines displayed on the center screen to help you line up a trailer. There’s also a tire pressure monitoring system for the truck and trailer to improve safety.

If it’s a payload, then you can load up 7,630 pounds into the bed of the F-250. A tailgate step helps get into that bed and it includes a handle that pops out to brace youself as you climb up, which is a welcome addition on a truck this high from the ground. There are LED lamps for seeing the bed in the dark and box side steps so you can reach into the bed from the sides.

Combine that capability with a vast number of configurations and a wide range of trims that make it easy to find exactly the F-250 that works for you. There’s rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, a 6.75-foot or 8-foot bed, and three cabs choices. The regular cab seats three while the super cab and crew cab have plenty of room for six.

There are also two available engines. The standard engine is a 6.2-liter V8 with 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. Your step up is a 6.7-liter turbocharged V8 diesel with 450 horsepower and 935 lb-ft of torque. If you’re planning on towing heavy loads, then the extra torque in the diesel will serve you well.

We spent our time with the diesel engine and found it responsive, although don’t expect it to be particularly speedy. It’s a big truck and the benefit of the diesel isn’t the horsepower, which takes a mild jump, but the torque for towing. Still, it’s no slouch and merging into high speed traffic is not a challenge.

You will notice the noise of the diesel engine whether you’re standing outside or sitting in the cab, but it’s not the outright racket of old. It’s the truck version of a sports car’s gruff exhaust note. We like it.

We also like that, despite its capability, this is a comfortable ride. It’s not sedan smooth, of course, but it isn’t so harsh it rattles your teeth. There’s an acceptable amount of bounce and sway over rough roads and there’s more than enough room for three large adults to sit with ease in the rear seats.

Trims run the gamut from the base XL at $33,150 to the luxurious Limited at $80,240. That’s nearly $50,000 more for the top trim, but there’s a big difference in these trucks. It’s not so much about capability, but features. If you’re looking for a basic work truck, then go with and XL or XLT. If you want your work truck to double as a luxury ride, then go with the Platinum or Limited and you won’t be disappointed.

The 2019 Ford F-250 Super Duty is a work truck with the capability you need to get through the day. It balances that with a comfortable ride and roomy interior with the style and features of a luxury car.
