FIRST DRIVE: Aston Martin DB11 V8

Posted by

Aston Martin is a luxury brand known for building sleek, elegant, and powerful cars. Each is carefully engineered to provide a uniquely Aston Martin experience in every way. The latest car to join this elite roster is the DB11 V8, which is the follow-up to the well-received DB11 V12.

It’s easy to dismiss the V8 simply because you know the V12 exists. Why in the world would anyone opt for less power? It doesn’t make sense at all, until you spend some time driving each DB11. They have the same name, the same look, the same impeccable pedigree, but these are two different cars, each with its own unique drive characteristics.

The engineers at Aston Martin didn’t simply give the DB11 a smaller engine and call it done. Instead they made little changes throughout that make this version of the DB11 its own car. Changes include new engine mounts and modified air intake, exhaust, and wet sump lubrication systems.

The V8 also weighs 253 pound less and has a 49 front/51 rear weight distribution, instead of the V12’s 51/49 setup. All these changes create a version of the DB11 that drives differently. It’s sportier despite having less horsepower and it handles with more agility, especially through tight corners.

The performance numbers on the V8 are smaller, but still impressive. It has 503 horsepower and 498 lb-ft of torque paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. It posts a 0-62 mph time of only 4.0 seconds and has a top speed of 187 mph. Sure, there’s 97 horsepower less under the hood, but its improved handling make the horsepower something you won’t miss.

There’s also more to owning a DB11 than horsepower. This is a hand-built luxury car that provides an unparalleled experience for those fortunate enough to take a seat inside. Rich, hand-stitched leather adorns most every surface from the dashboard to the seats. You’ll sink back into those decadent seats and stay snug in place whether on a leisurely drive or out having more spirited fun.

An Aston Martin isn’t just an expensive sports car. It’s an experience from the way it looks to the way it feels, to the way it sounds. From the moment you set eyes on the DB11 you know you’re looking at something special.
