REVIEW: 2016 Infiniti QX60 3.5L V6 AWD – Luxury For All In the Family

The 2016 Infiniti QX60 3.5L V6 AWD is a treat for every member of the family, as the luxury doesn’t stop after the first row.

What is it? 

Three-row AWD crossovers have become the new large family cars in America, with capacity for seven or eight seats, and the 2016 Infiniti QX60 3.5L V6 AWD is one of the best on the market.

What makes it special, particularly at the top trim level, is that the QX60 coddles every person who rides inside – including the driver, of course.


Pricing and trims

The 2016 QX60 line starts at a very reasonable $43K, but our test vehicle seems to make more sense given that Nissan offers a more affordable version of the QX60 called the Nissan Pathfinder. If you’re a bargain shopper, then start with the Pathfinder.

At nearly $60K, our fully-outfitted tester is hard to call a bargain given the $51K Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited AWD and $53K Ford Explorer Platinum we tested in the past month. That does not mean the QX60 3.5L V6 AWD isn’t the best pick. It definitely would be for certain buyers.

Our tester included the Deluxe Technology Package, Theater Package, Premium Plus Package, and Premium Package. It also had pearl-finish paint that cost an additional $500.

If we could offer Infiniti any advice, it would be to fix its crazy “Q-everything” model name scheme and to include more stuff as standard equipment. Even for those who do this for a living, deciphering what the QX60 is in this trim level is difficult. When we tried to tell interested friends and family about the car they kept saying “Didn’t you already have the Infiniti Q as a tester?”

Unlike the Ford Explorer, the 2016 Infiniti QX60 3.5L V6 AWD is a Top Safety Pick Plus-rated vehicle. That matches the Highlander’s rating.


Our tester had all manner of active safety devices. We actually felt the Backup Collision Prevention while backing up near some trees. Your test driver may once have bumped a test car into a tree, and was glad to have the help. It is effective, and any family vehicle could benefit from this common sense system.

Infiniti has always had excellent V6 engines. The current version in the 2016 Infiniti QX60 3.5L V6 AWD boasts 265 hp and 248 ft-lb of torque. In every situation this is more than enough power. The vehicle feels fast when merging onto the highway, and the engine is smooth and quiet.


Although it’s down 15 hp from the Highlander Hybrid we recently tested, the QX60 3.5L V6 AWD felt much faster. The Ford Explorer with its EcoBoost turbo engine is a rocket, but much of the power goes to waste in a huge crossover. The Ford’s 18 mpg EPA combined rating makes this 2016 Infiniti QX60 3.5L V6 AWD’s 22 mpg rating sound quite attractive.

Unfortunately, Infiniti specifies premium fuel to get the most out of this V6.


Infiniti’s constantly variable transmission (CVT) is an asset. It is super smooth in operation around town, and when one floors the gas on a highway on-ramp the CVT mimics the shifts you expect to feel. Compared to the Highlander Hybrid’s CVT, and the Explorer’s 6-speed auto transmission, we would say this is the best of the three by far. There are snow and sport modes as well as “normal.”

Ride and handling

Despite its low-profile tires on 20-inch rims, the QX60 3.5L V6 AWD is comfortable on bad roads. On the highway it is smooth, quiet, and easy to keep pointed straight.


We didn’t toss the QX60 3.5L V6 AWD around like we did the Q50 Red Sport 3.0T 400 sports sedan, but in normal driving the steering feels great, and the QX60 drives smaller than its size. Fun would be a stretch, but most drivers will appreciate that this is a well-designed vehicle.


We loved the front seats, and the simple rotary knob to adjust cooling and heating is fantastic.


The second row had a three-across bench. Although not as snazzy as the Highlander’s captain’s chairs, they are comfortable and both a 5-year old and a 6-foot tall 17-year-old gave them the thumbs up.


The third row was easy to access and we put a 14-year old who is 5’11” in the back. He reported that it was very comfortable. Note the headliner’s extra space above his head. The rear headrests are easy to fold, which makes rear visibility better.



The QX60 3.5L V6 AWD is very easy to configure for hauling stuff. We loaded up a big flat screen TV using just the pace behind the second row. Then we went shopping, and still had room for a full load of groceries.

The cargo area is massive when all the back seats are folded. That handle you see near the back bumper opens to a cargo area, and the spare is up under the vehicle.


Infotainment and controls

We have become familiar with Infiniti’s infotainment system, but it is more confusing to use than the Highlander and Explorer. We do love the Around View monitor and on a large vehicle it was particularly useful.



Buyers looking for luxury, power, space, and safety will find it in the QX60 3.5L V6 AWD. The maple trim in our tester was the only drawback other than premium fuel we could point to. Some buyers may love it, but the glossy wood makes this modern vehicle look old-fashioned in our opinion.

Having sampled three of the top-selling three-row crossovers on the market with prices from about $51K to about $59K, we can say with confidence that shoppers will find the 2016 QX60 3.5L V6 AWD one of the most luxurious.
