REVIEW: 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Offers Off-Road Capability in a Comfy Crossover

2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude

The 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude is part off-road ruggedness and part city-friendly crossover. It takes the Jeep reputation for being ready to handle anything and turns it into a vehicle that is comfortable and perfect for family road trips.

Jeep has a reputation for being up for mud and dirt and rocks. The first thing people think of is the Wrangler and they usually picture it with the doors off, the sun shining, and the radio blasting. That’s only one Jeep. The Cherokee takes that fun and makes it more practical.

There is room for five passengers and a range of trim levels starting with the base Sport and moving all the way up to the Limited with its luxe interior and lengthy features list. We drove the Latitude which comes in one step above the Sport.

The Jeep Cherokee looks good no matter the trim with that signature 7-slot grille that immediately identifies this car as a Jeep. It’s not a full-size SUV, but a good-sized crossover with plenty of room for the family and cargo in the back. There’s 54.9 cubic feet behind the first row with a 2,000-pound towing capacity.

We took a multi-day road trip with the Latitude packed full with four passengers and our luggage. The kids had plenty of room, even enough to spread out with their laptops to play games along the way. It’s spacious and comfortable even after hours on the road.

Same goes for the front seats which never felt stiff and tiresome even after several hours behind the wheel. This Jeep Cherokee Latitude came equipped with the True North Edition package ($1,795) which featured leather trimmed seats, power 8-way driver’s seat with power 4-way lumbar adjust, heated seats, and a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel. The seat was easy to position and proved supportive throughout the trip.

The standard engine is a 2.4-liter I4 paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Our Latitude featured an optional 3.2-liter V6 ($795) that is well worth the price. Its 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque let us easily cruise by slower vehicles and provided plenty of power to manage high speed merges in heavy traffic. The upgraded engine comes with an automatic start/stop system and dual bright exhausts.

The upgraded UConnect system ($795) featured an 8.4″ display with AM/FM/SXM/BT and was simple and intuitive to use. The UConnect system continues to be one of the easiest to figure out and it’s also one of the least frustrating systems. You won’t be jabbing your fingers at the touchscreen trying to find a setting that is somehow hidden in a labyrinth of menus that don’t make sense.

Handling is smooth and more sedan-like than you would expect. There is a minimal amount of body roll and quick steering adjustments won’t make the vehicle sloppy and hard to control. It nicely evens out rough pavement, even the potholed excuse for roads that are the norm for New York highways. Electronic roll mitigation, hill start assist, and trailer sway damping add additional safety and stability.

The Cherokee Latitude features the Selec-Terrain traction control system with options of Auto, Snow, Sport, or Sand/Mud. This gives you a choice of picking your own settings for the traction control system or letting the Cherokee figure it out on its own. It might be summer now, but come winter, that 4×4 capability and Snow setting are going to come in handy.

The crossover market is a hot one and there are a growing number of choices. The 2015 Jeep Cherokee offers something the rest can’t quite pull off with its off-road capability. Combine that with a versatile, comfortable interior, and classic Jeep styling and the Jeep Cherokee is a great choice.
