2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Profile

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport GT 2.4 is the top of the line model with a new more powerful 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. This gives it a 20-horsepower boost over the standard engine. It also receives nice convenience upgrades making it a stylish crossover with an economical price.

Mitsubishi introduced two new trim levels this year, both with the larger engine. It has 168 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque and offers a noticeable improvement over the smaller engine. The Outlander Sport is a compact crossover, so the extra horsepower makes a difference, but it’s still not a powerful vehicle.

The challenge comes on highways where a heavy foot on the gas doesn’t produce the expected reactions. It takes too long to respond and then gets up to speed too slowly. It simply isn’t enough to make this a strong, confident ride.

The interior also received upgrades this year, and that’s where Mitsubishi hit the mark. Materials look and feel better in this year’s Outlander Sport. Seats are more comfortable, and the overall impression is no longer one of an economy car. The 2.4 GT has the best interior of the lot with carbon audio panel trim, power seats, aluminium pedals, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. It gives the interior a little pizzaz.

2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Front Seats

Seating is very comfortable up front with ample support for driver and passenger. The driver gets a power seat and both front seats are heated. Rear seating is stiffer, but still fine for all but the longest rides. There’s seating for three in back, but the middle seat is best used for only short journeys.

The infotainment system features a 6.1-inch touchscreen with SiriusXM, HD Radio, and a rearview camera. Sound comes from a 140-watt AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with 6 speakers. Our test model featured the GT Touring Package ($4,650) which added a 710-watt Rockford Fosgate system with 9 speakers and a subwoofer. This helped make the Outlander Sport feel very unlike an economy car.

That same package also adds a 7-inch touchscreen with navigation, leather seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a panoramic sunroof. It’s a pricey package, but the options it includes add to the car’s appeal significantly, which makes it a worthy addition.

As previously mentioned, the Outlander Sport GT 2.4, even with its improved engine, is still not a powerful vehicle, but that doesn’t mean it’s not an enjoyable drive. It smooths out nicely over the road, with only larger bumps and dips intruding into the cabin. All-wheel control performed well on snowy roads, and overall handling was good.

Although it has a comforatable, controlled ride, the Outlander Sport GT 2.4 is not quiet. Noise comes first from the continously variable automatic transmission. Sound intrudes into the cabin the moment you accelerate and stays with you throughout the ride. At highway speeds, it can be droning. Add to this an abundance of wind and road noise, and you end up with a very noisy interior.

Mitsubishi says they’ve added thicker front door window glass on all trim levels along with rear quarter panel sound insulation, but we noticed no difference in noise over the prior model year. It’s enough that you need to raise your voice on the highway, even though this isn’t a huge cabin space.

Pricing on the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport GT 2.4 lets you forgive some of its faults. Our test model came in at $29,645 making this quite a value. It’s not a high-end luxury car, but you’re not paying for that car. You’re paying for a stylish, nicely equipped, compact crossover that is affordable for the masses. Add fuel economy of 23/26 city/highway, and its appeal is even greater.

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport GT 2.4 is a step in the right direction with its more powerful engine. Styling and quality are also improved, but are overshadowed by a loud interior. Its affordable price and great fuel economy keep it in the game as an economy crossover.
