REVIEW: 2016 Audi TT Roadster – Luxury, Performance, and Fun

The 2016 Audi TT Roadster combines the joy of a roadster with the sensibility of a luxury sedan.

It is not a boring and staid vehicle. Instead, it is plenty fun to drive with a turbocharged engine that puts other roadsters to shame.

What is it? 

There are expectations of luxury brands like Audi, but roadsters by very definition throw those expectations out the window. The TT Roadster does a fantastic job of working the Audi ethos into a two-seat convertible that is something of a rocket when you step on the gas.


Pricing and trims

There is only a single trim level available, but there are plenty of options to up the luxury ante. Every TT Roadster features all-wheel-drive and a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission with a starting price of $46,400.


Our test model featured over $10,000 in options including Tango Red metallic paint, Technology Package, S Sport Seat Package, 19-inch Wheel Package, and a Bang and Olufsen sound system.


Standard safety features include multiple airbags, 3-point safety belts with automatic pretensioning and force limiters, rollover protection, and an anti-theft system. Anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and rear parking sensors with acoustic guidance are also standard.


Opting for the Technology Package adds Parking System Plus with Rearview Camera and Audi Side Assist. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety had not crash tested the 2016 Audi TT Roadster at the time of this review.

The sole powertrain is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. It provides 220 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque that gives the TT Roadster plenty of power. There is nothing mild or demure about this car. Press the gas and it takes off like a rocket.


That throttle response is kicked up a notch by using the shifter to switch the transmission into “S” mode. Everything gets more aggressive as it holds lower gears longer for a better response and even adds a nicer exhaust note, at least it’s nice for anyone that enjoys the sound of a performance car.


There is no manual transmission option, but you can use that same gear shift to switch it into manual mode and then blip it up or down to shift gears. There are paddle shifters too, though the dual-clutch automatic times things so well that you typically won’t feel the need to mess with a good thing.

Ride and handling

Roadsters are supposed to be fun to drive and the TT Roadster is no exception.


It is smooth and responsive, though the steering could be a little heavier. It is quieter than most convertibles with the top up and lets only the most uneven road surfaces intrude into the cabin.


Seating is expectedly narrow, but it’s not cramped. The heated sport seats are 12-way power adjustable with lumbar.


Audi takes comfort a step further with neck vents to keep you warm when the weather turns chilly so you can have more top-down fun. Heavy bolstering holds you in nicely on tight corners.


You aren’t buying a roadster for its trunk space, but there’s still more room there than you might expect. The roadster doesn’t have the rear seats of its coupe cousin, so you have 9.9 cubic feet of trunk space at your disposal. Consider the 4.2 cubic feet you’ll get in competitors like the Nissan 370Z and the TT Roadster’s trunk is spacious.

Infotainment and controls

You won’t find a screen stuffed into the center of the dashboard on the TT Roadster. Instead, there’s Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, which puts all of that information on the instrument cluster. It keeps your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel, although passengers can’t see what’s happening if they decide to scroll through radio station presets.

The standard sound system includes AM/FM/satellite radio, and SiriusXM. There are two USB ports for charging devices and the car supports Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The optional Bang & Olufsen sound system on our test model sounded spectacular, even at high speeds with the top down.



The Audi TT Roadster delivers the premium luxury car experience of an Audi along with great handling and performance. It also sheds any stuffiness with an open-top drive experience that will have you dropping the top until the snow falls.

It proves a roadster can be both fun and luxurious without sacrificing performance in the process. Those who want their roadster with more creature comforts will appreciate the TT Roadster.


The drawback is the cost of putting the TT Roadster in your driveway. Pricing starts at nearly $50,000, and expensive options quickly tick that number higher putting it out of reach for many buyers.
