The 2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited is a well-rounded family sedan. It scores well on safety tests, has roomy and comfortable rear seats, and is affordable. It’s not perfect, but there are lots of reasons to park this sedan in your driveway.

Let’s start with the good stuff. The 2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited knocks it out of the park when it comes to safety. It scored a top rating of five stars in every National Highway Transportation Safety Administration crash test.

It managed a similar feat during Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Testing, earning their top score of Good in all crash tests. It is also a Top Safety Pick+, their highest overall rating, thanks to optional forward collision mitigation systems.

Standard safety features include 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, brake assist, vehicle dynamics control, and traction control. Blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert with a rear-vision camera add an extra layer of protection.

EyeSight technology is also available, though only as an optional feature. It includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure and sway warning, lane keep assist, and pre-collision braking, which has been shown to significantly reduce accidents and may one day be required on every vehicle.

The 2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited is safe and it’s also comfortable. There is room for 5 passengers with a large backseat. It easily holds three adults with plenty of legroom and headroom, even for those over six feet.

Front seating is equally comfortable with a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat including lumbar and 2 memory settings. The front passenger has a 4-way power adjustable seat.

Seating has minimal bolstering, which makes it ideal for larger frames. It’s a roomy passenger space that makes the Subaru Legacy feel bigger than you think when you look at it from the outside. There’s also plenty of cargo room with 15 cubic feet in the trunk.

There are standard features you might not expect to find on a sedan at this price point, like heated front and rear seats. Those seats are also leather with a matching leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift handle. Woodgrain accents add further to the upscale vibe of this affordable sedan.

The touches of luxury styling match the ride, which is smooth and easy on any surface. There’s no performance car roughness to the Legacy. Handling is good with a nicely-weighted steering wheel that provides minimal road feedback and solid control. All-wheel drive is standard to improve handling when road conditions are poor.

Although road and wind noise are kept to a minimum, the same cannot be said for engine noise. The Subaru Legacy is powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. This is paired to a continuously variable transmission.

CVTs are notoriously noisy things, but they improve fuel efficiency. This is why they’re found in so many of today’s cars. The Legacy is rated 26 city/36 highway/30 combined. Those are numbers that will keep your money in your wallet even when gas prices aren’t at record lows.

The price you pay is a noisy engine. This is most noticeable during acceleration and at highway speeds. It’s not a deal-breaker for this sedan, but it is a drawback, especially if there will frequently be rear passengers. Any conversation between front and rear passengers requires slightly raised voices.

The Subaru Starlink infotainment system includes a 7-inch high-resolution touchscreen with HD Radio, SiriusXM, single-disc CD changer, and a 440-watt Harmon Kardon 8-speaker audio system with subwoofer. Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free phone connectivity are also included. Navigation is available, but it’s not a standard feature.

The system is easy to use with clear menus and large icons. The touchscreen is responsive and well-positioned so there’s no glare, even with the sunroof open and the sun streaming onto the screen. The sound quality from the Harmon Kardon system is top-notch.

Pricing on the Legacy makes it a budget-conscious car that doesn’t feel like one. The base model starts at $21,745 while our 2.5i Limited starts out $27,145. Adding navigation, EyeSight, and the moonroof brought that number up to $30,230.

The 2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited delivers a comfortable, well-equipped sedan with advanced safety technology. It has an appealing interior and pricing to fit even the tightest of budgets making it a compelling choice.
