REVIEW: 2017 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro Prestige – Sporty Sedan Style

Posted by

This year’s Audi A4 is all-new so there are plenty of improvements to this sporty sedan. It has a more powerful engine, updated design, and Audi’s snazzy virtual cockpit that technophiles will love.

Sedans aren’t the darlings of the market these days with SUVs and crossovers taking an ever increasing piece of the pie. Smaller sedans like the A4, which offers room for five only if the rear seat passengers are willing to get to know each other better, are an even tougher sell. Despite this, there are great reasons to park one in your driveway.

Audi isn’t known for producing boring cars. Their vehicles are built for people who like to drive. If that’s you, then you’re going to enjoy your time behind the wheel of the 2017 A4.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, turbocharged engine with 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque which marks an increase over last year’s model. This is paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission that is smooth and refined. Paddle shifters let you take full advantage of the A4’s power and Audi drive select lets you tailor the drive to your style. Choose from comfort, auto, dynamic, or individual mode depending on whether you want a relaxed or sporty drive.

The interior is typical Audi. It’s elegant and tailored with plenty of leather trims, comfortable seats, and muted accents. The A4 might drive on the sporty side, but inside it leans toward luxury car elegance.

The drive is comfortable and smooth with even rougher roads smoothed out by the suspension. The engine is equally well-mannered. Yes, it’s powerful and fun to drive, but it’s not loud and obnoxious. It has an aggressive spirit hidden within a mild-mannered sedan package.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2017 Audi A4 its highest ratings. It scored a Good in all crash tests and a Superior for front crash prevention technologies, which was enough to earn it a Top Safety Pick+ rating.

Audi’s virtual cockpit has a 12.3-inch screen in front of the driver that creates an extension of the infotainment screen. Numerous configurations let the driver tailor that screen to show exactly the information they think is most important whether it’s the radio station selections or current fuel economy.

Offered in Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige trims, our test model was the high-end Prestige and came in at $52,325. Drop down a trim or two and you can bring that number down, but even at just over $50K, the 2017 Audi A4 is well-priced. It offers the style, safety, and performance buyers want in a sporty sedan.
