PREVIEW: 2015 Ducati Scrambler

Scramblers came out of the 1970s as a concession for street riders that enjoyed the occasional trip off-road. That market’s mostly soaked up by more dirt-oriented dual-sports now, but occasionally, a good-looking Scrambler comes along to reignite some passion around motorcycles that don’t look like angry insects. The 2015 Ducati Scrambler hits the nail on the head.

Ducati had its own range of Scramblers in the late 1960s and early 1970s, based on its successful bevel-drive and later Desmo single cylinder engines. You don’t see them much anymore, but this modern version has a bit of the old Scrambler’s charm.


It features an air-cooled, 800cc twin that should be good for hustling up past highway speed, and with a starting price of $8,589, it backs up its relatively modest entry price with a ton of interesting equipment. Look for a six-speed transmission — one more gear than the Triumph — standard dual-channel ABS (!), a USB port in the under-seat storage compartment and LCD gauges.

The alloy wheels are wrapped with Pirelli MT60RS street-knobbys, with a single 330mm disc and four-pot caliper up front, and a 245mm disc with a single-piston floater in the rear.


The Triumph Scrambler’s problem has always been weight. It clocks in at 506 pounds. The Ducati Scrambler comes at 130 pounds lighter, which should make this bike an absolute riot.

The bike comes in four different variations, ranging from $8,495 to $9,995 here in the United States.
