The Toyota Camry has been named the most dependable vehicle in America by J.D. Power and Associates.
The Toyota Camry may well be the vehicle with the most mosts. For sure it is the vehicle with most important mosts. For example, the Camry ranks high on lists of the Most American-Made mainstream cars in America. The Camry is also the sedan model with the most sales. This week, J.D. Power and Associates showed us that the Camry is also the most dependable.
The J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study is really the compilation of survey results. So, in essence, it is a report that tells us what actual owners of cars say about the car and its durability in the first full year of ownership. For that reason, the car that the new report is talking about is actually the 2014 model-year Camry. The group has to let the first year pass before compiling the results and that also takes some time.
The survey J.D. Power and Associates sends to owners asks owners about 177 specific problems grouped into eight sections. The data is then presented in the four major groupings shown above. The Camry earned a score of five out of five in every category. Each vehicle also earns a specific score. The folks at J.D. Power and Associates explain the score by saying, “Overall dependability is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality. ” The Camry earned a score of just 110 (remember, lower is better). The average of the top-10 best-selling vehicles in America was 134. The overall average is 156.
Our friends at CarComplaints.com have done a different kind of analysis, based on a combination of issues reported to NHTSA, recalls, and most importantly, owner information to determine the most reliable year of Camry. That 2014? Yeah, it did pretty well.
Toyota’s brand average is also the highest among all mainstream brands. Its Lexus division tops the premium category and both brands earned the most category wins. Significantly, both also won the categories that produce the most overall vehicles, except one. In the large light truck segment, the Toyota Tundra was just second. Slacker.
